How Refunds Work

We offer three refund mechanisms:

  1. Pre-preparation refund window — Full refund within 30 days of payment if we haven't substantially begun your application.
  2. Money-back guarantee — Full refund if CRA denies both your application and appeal.
  3. Practice-initiated termination refund — Full or partial refund if we end the engagement.

This Policy explains each in detail.


1. Pre-Preparation Refund Window

When it applies

You may request a full refund within 30 days of payment, as long as we have not yet substantially begun preparing your application. If your province's consumer-protection law gives you a longer cancellation or cooling-off right, that longer period applies.

What "substantially begun" means

"Substantially begun" means we have completed case evaluation and started drafting application content based on your questionnaire responses. Specifically:

  • Case evaluation alone does not count as "substantially begun"
  • We notify you by email when application preparation begins
  • You will know whether we have substantially begun by checking your account or contacting us

How to request

Email hello@unlockdtc.ca with your refund request. Include your account email and reason for refund (reason is optional but helpful for us).

Timeline

Refunds are processed within 14 business days of confirmation.

Refunds are issued to the original payment method.


2. Money-Back Guarantee

When it applies

The Money-Back Guarantee applies after we have substantially completed your application and CRA has denied both your initial application and your appeal.

Conditions

To qualify for the guarantee:

  • CRA must issue a written denial of your initial application;
  • We must file a Notice of Objection (appeal) on your behalf;
  • CRA must uphold the denial after considering the Notice of Objection;
  • You must have cooperated reasonably throughout the process (responding to information requests, attending physician appointments you scheduled, providing accurate information).

What's covered

  • Full refund of the $200 fee you paid to us.

What's not covered

  • Physician fees (these are paid directly to the practitioner, not to us);
  • Applications you choose not to submit after we prepare them;
  • Appeals you choose not to pursue after CRA's initial denial;
  • Applications withdrawn at any stage;
  • Cases where the information you provided to us was materially inaccurate or misleading.

Timeline

  • You have 60 days from receiving CRA's final denial to claim the guarantee.
  • We process guarantee refunds within 14 business days of confirming the conditions are met.

How to claim

Email hello@unlockdtc.ca with:

  • Your CRA denial letters (initial and post-appeal);
  • A brief statement that you're claiming the guarantee.

3. Practice-Initiated Termination Refund

When it applies

If we decide to end your engagement before completing services (for reasons described in our Service Agreement Section 11(b)), refund terms depend on what work we have completed.

Refund tiers

  • If we terminate before substantially beginning application preparation: Full $200 refund.
  • If we terminate after substantially beginning application preparation: 50% refund ($100).

Reasons we might terminate

We may end the engagement if:

  • You haven't provided required information or cooperation after reasonable requests;
  • You're unreachable for 30+ days during the active application process;
  • Our professional judgment is that the case cannot reasonably succeed under CRA criteria (this is a conversation we'd have with you first, not a unilateral decision);
  • You provided false or misleading information;
  • Continuing would create a conflict of interest.

Notice

We provide written notice of termination, except in cases of material breach. You will be told the specific reason.

Timeline

Refunds are processed within 14 business days of termination.


4. What's Not Refundable

  • Physician fees: Paid directly by you to the practitioner, never collected by us.
  • Taxes (GST/HST/PST) on our fee: Refunded along with the fee when applicable. We do not retain taxes on refunded amounts.
  • Third-party fees: Any fees you incur directly with third parties (e.g., notary fees, certified mail) are not refundable through us.

5. If You're Unhappy

If you're unhappy with our services for reasons that don't fit the refund mechanisms above, please contact us at hello@unlockdtc.ca.

We will work with you in good faith to resolve concerns. Resolution might include:

  • Additional explanation or work on your application;
  • Coordination with you to address the underlying issue;
  • In some cases, a refund or partial refund at our discretion.

We respond to concerns within 7 business days.


6. Refund Disputes

If you disagree with a refund decision:

  1. First: Email hello@unlockdtc.ca to request review. We'll have a different person review the decision.
  2. Second: If still unresolved, you may file a complaint with applicable consumer protection authorities (e.g., Consumer Protection BC, Office of Consumer Affairs in your province).
  3. Third: You retain the right to pursue legal remedies in court.

7. Refund Method

All refunds are processed to the original payment method. We do not issue refunds by cheque, wire transfer, or other methods unless the original payment method is no longer available.

Refund processing times:

  • Credit card refunds: 14 business days to process from our end. Your bank may take additional time to post the credit to your account (typically 3-7 business days).
  • If the original payment method is no longer available: Contact us for alternative arrangements.

8. Tax Treatment of Refunds

If you received a refund of fees you paid for tax preparation services, this may affect your tax filings. Consult a tax professional if you have questions about the tax treatment of refunds.
